Want to Learn Gatsby? Just Read the Docs!

On the weekend I spent time learning about Gatsby. For people who don’t know, Gatsby is a React based site generator.

Usually, when I try and learn new tech, I often avoid the official documentation and look for videos on YouTube or a free course. This is a bad habit of mine because most projects have proper documentation these days.

However, the Gatsby documentation is outstanding, especially the tutorials. So if you want to learn how to use it, then I’d start with the “Gatsby.js Tutorials” section and work your way through it.

2018-19 FIA Formula E

Formula E is a new racing series using full-electric cars. I enjoy watching the racing because each race is just 45 minutes + 1 lap.

You won’t have to give up a full afternoon to watch it.

Another great thing about the series is that the full races are uploaded onto YouTube which is amazing.

Below are the full race videos and the highlights for each round.

šŸ•Metre Long Pizza at Napoli Centrale Newcastle

We just discovered that you can buy metre long pizza in Newcastle at Napoli Centrale.

Highly recommend them, the pizza was great.

Here are some photos. You can see that we had to put the pizza in the boot (trunk for the US reader).

Hunter Valley Airshow 2019

At the beginning of this month, we went to the Hunter Valley Airshow at Cessnock Airport.

It was a great day!

Parking wasn’t a problem, which is always a big win, but it was hot. In most parts of Australia, if the sun is out this time of year, you’ll burn.

It’s been a long time since I was at an airshow and there was more than just aircraft at the show.

Below are some photos from the day… Enjoy.

Giant Umbrella on Merewether Beach

On our nightly walk along Merewether Beach, we noticed a giantĀ umbrella halfĀ submerged in the sand.

The umbrella is part of a guerilla marketing campaign by Netflix promoting “The Umbrella Academy”. I did have to google what it is. šŸ™‚

Icebreaker 2.0 at Toastmasters

On Thursday, I did my Icebreaker speech at Toastmasters.

This is the second time I’ve done an Icebreaker, so it’s my Icebreaker 2.0.

The presentation went well, got a few laughsĀ and I was able to do the whole speech without notes.

When I joined my first Toastmasters club I’d always use notes with the lectern. This time I got up and moved the lectern to the side and went for it.

Now it’s time to prepare for my next speech.

Speaking at DrupalSouth Canberra 2018

DrupalSouth this year will be held in Canberra this December.

My presentation, Media Management in Drupal 8, has been accepted which is great news!!!

Best of all, I’ll be presenting at 9 am on Monday (the first day), which is great because I can get theĀ presentation over and done with. Then I can relax and enjoy the conference.

My session is broken out into two parts; slides and demo.

I have 63 slides where I discuss the history of media in Drupal and which modules you should use.

Presentation slides

The rest of the time will be spent demonstrating how to configure modules.

Hope to see you all at DrupalSouth.

Offical Toastmasters Member

I’ve been sworn in as a member at a new Toastmasters club, so now it’s official. I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I attend my first ToastmastersĀ meeting in a couple of years.

I’ve found a great club and looking forward to working my way through the new Pathways program.

I completed theĀ competent communicator manual at the first club I joined which was about 12 years ago (damn I feel old šŸ˜€).

Now I need to work on my icebreaker speech.
